Japan is the world’s 3rd largest economy with more than 126 million potential consumers. In addition to this, it is a large research and innovation nation. Today, the Danish export to Japan is 22 billion DKK. The free trade agreement between EU and Japan, expected to be concluded in 2017, will - when implemented - undoubtedly further strengthen the trade relationship between Denmark and Japan.
In 2017 Denmark and Japan celebrate 150 years of friendship and diplomatic relations.
Having been serving since December 2012, Shinzo Abe is the current and one of the longest serving Prime Ministers in Japanese history. He is also the President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which holds the majority in both upper and lower house.
Currently, Japan has two major structural challenges, those being the rapidly increasing ageing population where 27.4% is above 65 years, and the relatively large national debt.
